Membership chair JOY WOODERSON will be traveling to Los Angeles in April and New York City in May to read her creative nonfiction piece "Bougainvillea and Barbed Wire: A Former Citizen Looks at the New South Africa." During our Feb 23 meeting, KMOV Channel 4 Writer and Producer Dan Dillon, gave a humorous and informative presentation on the good, the bad, and the ugly of collaborating and making the most of a failed project.  Dan also took us on a trip down memory lane through the City of St. Louis by giving us a Trivia Challenge, reminiscing about Prom Magazine and spotlighting some St. Louis high schools.

Okay, St. Louis trivia buffs.  Here are Dan's questions from Saturday. The answers can be found in his fascinating book, "So, Where'd You Go to High School" published by Virginia Publishing in St. Louis.

For those who don't have a copy of the book, you can check your answers on this web site after March 1:

1.  What St. Louis high school boasts of the largest collection of billiard and pool tables in its basement?

Answer: St. Louis University High School

2.  What diner/restaurant was a favorite hang-out for the boys who attended McBride High School on Kingshighway Blvd? (Hint: there are or were six of them in the St. Louis area.)

    Answer: The "Northside" Parkmoor

3.  What is the name of the school that the following celebrities attended: Vincent Price, Joe Buck, and John Danforth?

    Answer: Country Day

4.  Which high school was named after a famous surgeon? (Hint: It's on the city's northside.)

    Answer: Beaumont

5.  How many schools does Dan include in his book?  (Okay, you'll have to get to find a copy of the book to answer this one, but to give you a hint, it's an even number greater than 99 and less than 101).

    Answer: 100

For the curious who want to know where Dan went to high school: St.Thomas Aquinas, Class of 1972.

MYSTERY WRITER WOWS MEMBERS AT JANUARY MEETING

Local mystery writer Laura Bradford wowed members of Saturday Writers during her presentation at the January 26 meeting. During Bradford's "Tricks of the Promotion Trade" discussion, members got tips on how to: put together a professional-looking press kit, grab an editor's attention to get a press release in local papers, and approach editors and agents at conferences. She also talked about the importance of having a personal website and a blog to connect with your readers. Bradford's professional, personal, and "not-too-pushy" approach to the business of writing has helped her meet some top-notch mystery and thriller writers, such as Harlan Coben and Mary Higgins Clark. FORMER SW PRESIDENT, AMY-WILLOUGHBY, NOMINATED FOR PUSHCART PRIZE

It's a bittersweet time for members of Saturday Writers as we say farewell to our immediate past president, Amy Willoughby-Burle. Amy, her husband RJ, and beautiful daughters Miranda and Delia are relocating to her home state of North Carolina. We will miss Amy's smile, enthusiasm, and playful sense of humor. Amy is not only a wonderful writer, to many of us she has also been a cherished friend.

Now for the sweet: The exciting news is that Amy recently received notification from the managing editor of MacGuffin magazine that the staff has nominated her story "Stone Jesus in the Front Yard" for a 2008 Pushcart Prize.  Isn't that a delightful parting gift?

Congratulations and Bon Voyage, Amy. We wish you well!
